Miller, Long & Arnold is a full-service turnkey concrete subcontractor, forming, pouring, and finishing all cast-in-place concrete elements necessary for a complete structural frame.  In the early 1990's, long-time Vice President of Miller & Long, Roger Arnold, sought to expand the company's market into Baltimore, Annapolis, and Frederick Maryland.  Miller, Long & Arnold now has over 25 years of experience building framed concrete structures and has completed over 200 projects in the greater Baltimore area.  Projects range from parking garages, office buildings, university classrooms and laboratories, hotels, apartments/condominiums, hospitals, and medical research facilities, many of which were completed in confined urban settings.  MLA works throughout the coldest winter months and hottest summer months with the knowledge and ability to meet all types of project specifications, schedules, and demands.  Few concrete companies have the depth of experience, skills, and resources as MLA.

Miller, Long & Arnold owns, operates, and maintains all of the resources necessary to construct commercial concrete projects of any size, including tower cranes, mobile cranes, concrete pumps, an array of earthwork equipment, and many different types of shoring and formwork systems.   

MLA is often consulted during the early stages of a project, reviewing design development documents to determine preliminary budgets and provide input on different building options, value engineering possibilities, constructability, logistics, and schedule.  We continue to provide support and input as the design progresses and final bidding/construction documents are issued.  This continual involvement allows MLA and the client to have a deep understanding of the project's specific requirements related to the concrete structure, and helps ensure that a complete scope of work and estimate are achieved.

Miller, Long & Arnold is committed to providing a safe and healthy work place for all employees.  The success of our safety program depends on the cooperation of every individual, therefore attention to safety starts at the top and permeates every level of the company.  Safety considerations are integrated into all of our construction activities and our supervisors are constantly working to identify and correct hazards, reduce accidents, promote safe working habits, and maintain clean work environments.

 

MLA has been accepted into Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Cooperative Compliance Partnerships (CCP's) on many of its larger projects.  These agreements are only for companies that have met the rigorous MOSH requirements and whose safety program exceeds industry standards.  

 

We employ a full time Corporate Safety Director whose responsibilities include weekly inspections. During these visits, a thorough examination of the entire jobsite is conducted using a detailed checklist that has been developed over years of experience, including the inspection of all tower cranes, equipment, tools, employee work habits, personal protective equipment, slab edge protection, and potential fall hazard zones.  The Safety Director then walks the jobsite with the full-time superintendent to discuss the inspection details, necessary remedial actions, and any other safety related topics.  On larger projects, quarterly safety walk throughs are conducted with a third-party construction safety/loss specialist to further enhance the safety program.

 

Monthly company-wide safety meetings are held for all superintendents, foremen, site safety personnel, engineers, and equipment operators.  Any accidents or close-calls since the previous meeting are discussed and analyzed in a round table forum in order to ensure input and understanding from all parties. The Safety Director presents a slide show highlighting safe working practices, as well as potentially hazardous situations found on all MLA jobsites during the weekly visits, and alerts personnel to any changing industry policies.  

 

Mandatory "Toolbox Talks," in which all employees on the jobsite are gathered together for a continual refresher on common safety related issues, are conducted weekly.  We consistently implement on-site training inside work areas to ensure that employees have a hands-on tutorial on their specific daily tasks, such as crane signaling and awareness, scaffold erection and dismantling, fall protections, excavations, etc.

BIM / VDC

At Miller, Long & Arnold, we use BIM technology from the early stages of project development until the time that the roof is poured.  We begin by using models to analyze the scope and complexity of large projects and to study the logistics that will be needed during construction, including the placement of tower cranes and concrete pumps.  Before construction begins, the concrete model can be used in conjunction with the other major trade models to perform clash detections  for potential conflicts.  As construction progresses in the field, the models can be used as a project management tool to generate RFI's and perform pour management.  When the project is complete, the concrete model can be turned over to the owner as an as-built to be used for future reference.
